With 16 years of experience in education, non-profit, for-profit, and government sectors, Alphonso Amos is committed to being a champion of economic equity, working for social justice and improving the quality of life for all.
Amos is the Executive Director of Urban Alliance Detroit, a non-profit headquartered in Washington, D.C. building a diverse next-generation workforce by providing job skills training, mentoring, pre-apprenticeships and paid internships to high school youth and young adults from underserved communities so that they may live a life of economic independence and upward mobility. Working with key partners including Bank of America and the Rocket family of companies, Urban Alliance Detroit annually serves more than 200 students in 11th and 12th grades.
Prior to joining Urban Alliance. Amos served as the National Director of Volunteer and Community Engagement for HBCUvc where he actively worked as a member of the senior leadership team to reimagine the innovation economy by developing the next generation of venture capital leaders in communities where entrepreneurs face barriers to accessing capital. Prior to that role, he was the Program Director of StreetWise Partners Michigan, overseeing the organization’s launch in Michigan, as well as regional program administration, strategic partnerships, advocacy, and development for the nation’s first stand-alone essential skills workforce development mentoring organization focused on serving adults from historically denied, under-served, and under-resourced communities.
He is the past president and current youth advisor of the Port Huron Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and a National (NAACP) NextGen Fellow. Amos also served in public office as a member of the Port Huron City Council. In addition to serving in public office, he has also served on the Michigan Municipal League Energy, Environment, & Technology Policy Committee and is a member of the People for the American Way Young Elected Officials Network and the Young Elected Officials Black Caucus. Amos is an alumnus of the Young People For Social Justice Fellowship and a YP4 alumni mentor.
